Kristen Merritt '03 - Finding Her Voice

merritKristen Merritt, a proud alumna of SUNY Corning Community College's Class of 2003, exemplifies the spirit of exploration and commitment to community service. Her journey to a successful career as a Speech Pathologist at Guthrie Healthcare is a testament to the value of CCC in shaping futures and providing foundational experiences.

Kristen chose CCC as an affordable and flexible option while she was uncertain about her career path after high school. Living in Horseheads and attending CCC allowed her to continue her education close to home. "Being able to live with my parents and attend a community college was the most affordable option," she recalls.

Her time at CCC was filled with memorable experiences, from enjoying lunches with friends on campus to taking her first theatre class and American Sign Language course. Kristen also vividly remembers the day of 9/11, when students gathered in the Commons building to watch the news together, finding comfort in their shared presence during a time of uncertainty and national crisis.

After graduating from CCC, Kristen transferred to SUNY Fredonia, where she pursued a B.S. in Speech and Language Disabilities, followed by an M.S. in Speech Pathology. The courses she took at CCC, including Developmental Psychology and Educational Psychology, were crucial in her academic and professional development. Today, she applies the knowledge gained at CCC to her work at Guthrie Healthcare and in raising her own young children.

Kristen's advice for students considering CCC is heartfelt and encouraging: "I am so glad I chose to attend CCC, and I have told many to consider the same, especially if unsure of the route they would like to go in. The campus is not overwhelming, a wide variety of classes are offered, and the instructors are skilled and competent."
