SUNY CCC Professor of Philosophy Dr. Gregg Caruso featured in a New Documentary, "Free Will? A Documentary"

Dr. Gregg D. Caruso, a Professor of Philosophy at SUNY Corning Community College, was recently featured in a 2023 documentary Free Will? A Documentary directed by Mike Walsh.

The documentary is an in-depth investigation featuring world-renowned philosophers and scientists into the most profound philosophical debate of all time: Do we have free will?

In the documentary, Dr. Caruso defends the view known as free will skepticism, which claims that who we are and what we do is ultimately the result of factors beyond our control. Because of this, he argues that individuals are never morally responsible for their actions in the basic desert sense.

Aside from teaching at SUNY CCC, Dr. Caruso is working on a new book titled Neurolaw. The 11th book of his career will explore the relationship between neuroscience and criminal law and how developments in neuroscience can impact criminal law. His authored books include Rejecting Retributivism: Free Will, Punishment, and Criminal Justice 2021 and Just Deserts: Debating Free Will with Daniel C. Dennett 2021.

About Free Will? A Documentary

“No idea is more fundamental to who we are than the idea that we are free to choose what we do and who we will become. This idea is known as free will, and since ancient times, humanity has debated whether or not we have it. The question remains: are we truly free? And in what sense are we free? Do forces beyond our control determine us? Is free will compatible with determinism? What does quantum mechanics and neuroscience say? Is free will necessary for society to function? What implications does free will have on morality, religion, and the criminal justice system? Free Will? A Documentary explores all these topics and more.”
