Mullaney Takes Office

SUNY Corning Community College welcomed Dr. William P. Mullaney as the seventh president, effective July 1, 2019.

“I am excited to lead SUNY Corning Community College as its next President,” Mullaney said. “I look forward to continuing the steadfast commitment to purpose that has propelled this institution for more than six decades. Community colleges are an integral part of communities everywhere. Our role is critical: we provide access to the type of knowledge and skills that have the power to enhance the quality of life and prepare employees who are on point and ready on day one to meet the workforce needs of the region.”

Mullaney comes to SUNY CCC from Bergen Community College where he worked with stakeholders to increase the rate of graduation by 7 percent over a three-year period. He collaborated with area high schools to open the College’s first early college programs, which allow students to earn a college degree or significant college credits while still in high school. Mullaney served as member of the Middle States Steering Committee, co-leader of a working group and final editor for the self-study report, which resulted in full accreditation and 48 exemplary commendations. In addition, he worked with the faculty to develop a number of new academic programs, including Paramedic Science, Fashion Design, and Sports Management, and helped to guide the development of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

“Our expectations for the presidential search were high, and I am pleased to say they were fully realized with the appointment of Dr. Mullaney,” said SUNY CCC Regional Board of Trustees Chair Carl H. Blowers. “We look forward to the continued evolution toward the College’s role as a premier two-year institution of higher education. His experience, management philosophies, and leadership style will ensure that efforts underway will continue uninterrupted, and his innovative spirit will help us realize the ambitious future we envision.”

During his first 100 days, Mullaney hopes to meet with many of the College’s stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of the community and its culture. In addition, he expects to champion an organization-wide effort that will address enrollment, seeking creating opportunities to stabilize the College’s student body. He will also focus on workforce development.

“The College enjoys a very strong transfer rate,” said Mullaney. “I expect to complement this focus with an equally strong rate for graduates who are prepared to meet our regional workforce needs upon program completion.”

Mullaney also expects to pursue a vibrant equity agenda.

“Diversity, inclusion, equity … these are all important components of the presidential mission at SUNY Corning Community College,” said Mullaney. “Racism and poverty continue to impact students’ access to higher education across the country, compelling colleges, especially colleges like Corning, to do all in our power to remediate and rectify this continued and devastating reality.”

Mullaney earned his doctorate at Tulane University, a master’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia. He is a published author and frequently invited to present at conferences across the country. Mullaney’s research interests explore American Literature, with particular foci on John Steinbeck and Harriet Beecher Stowe. He and his wife, Marianne, have three children. In his spare time, Mullaney enjoys reading, watching movies, travelling, and hiking with his family.
