Nonprofit Leadership
Workforce Education at SUNY Corning Community College is redesigning Non-Profit Leadership (NPL) series for 2025. The focus will be on leading from the middle.
Who?
The ideal candidate for the NPL is someone who has either been recently hired/ promoted to a director-level (or higher) position with some decision-making/budgetary authority. The NPL program will have a project to develop a new (or revise a current) program. The last session will be a capstone session where these ideas are presented to a panel of guests.
What?
The topics for this session will focus on four areas of the non-profit organization:
- Leading Self
- Leading Teams
- Leading the Business
- Leading Networks
In the Non-Profit Leadership program, the breakdown is as follows:
Week 1: Leading Self--Self-awareness, understanding your leadership style, leveraging strengths of you and your team; resiliency. Organizational skills. Discussion about new program project.
Week 2: Leading Teams--Leading from the middle--employees to Boards of Directors/ Funders. Non-profit governance; developing and managing a productive Board of Directors, including diversity on boards. Developing/implementing policies for staff with the Senior Management team.
Week 3: Leading the Business--Strategic Planning; including creative thinking, gathering feedback. Initial project ideas will be shared.
Week 4: Leading the Business--Public Relations, including how to handle crisis situations.
Week 5: Leading the Business--Budgeting and Financial Leadership; reporting; grant reporting.
Week 6: Leading the Business--Fundraising/Grant Development; how to strategically develop budgets and search for outside funding as part of the strategic plan
Week 7: Leading the Business--Operational and program development; implementation; reporting to both funders and boards of directors
Week 8: Leading the Business--Decision making for change; change management; how to forecast trends
Week 9: Leading Networks--Collaboration within/without the NP community; leading community wide initiatives; getting buy-in; with a community leaders panel
Week 10: Leading Networks--Collaboration with local, state, national networks/ politicians/funders; presentations with panel of leaders

Students may cancel 3 days or more prior to the day of class and receive a full refund. We solidify dates with instructors 3 days prior to the start of the class (or reschedule/cancel) and it is dependent upon enrollment. Cancellations with less than 3 days notice can not be refunded).
