Intro to Lean Thinking is a management philosophy that focuses on creating value with fewer resources and less waste. The goal of Lean Thinking is to engage the entire organization in identifying and eliminating waste, thus improving the flow, productivity, and quality of work.
Student Learning Outcomes: Participants will gain an understanding of the concepts of Lean Thinking, the philosophy behind it, and the tools associated with it.

Students will:
“Learn by doing” by going through hands-on activities in a simulated factory that deploys the concepts of Lean Thinking in five separate phases.

Outline of Course Topics:
     I. Lean Thinking philosophy
     II. Overview of the different components of Lean Thinking
          o 5S workplace organization
          o Visual management
          o Plant layout
          o Standardized work
          o Batch size reduction
          o Cross-trained and empowered teams
          o Quality at the source
          o Point of Use Storage (POUS)
          o Quick changeovers
          o Pull systems
          o Cellular workplace design
          o Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
     III. The basics of Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
     IV. The advantages and benefits of adopting a Lean Thinking culture

Why this type of training is important to manufacturers:
The aim of Lean Thinking is to create a lean culture, one that sustains growth by aligning customer satisfaction with employee satisfaction. The basic insight of Lean Thinking is that of mindset, in every person to identify wasted time and effort in their own job and eliminating such waste, the resulting culture (basic thinking, mindset and assumptions) will deliver more
value at less expense while developing every employee's confidence, competence and ability to work with others.
