CORNING, N.Y. -- SUNY Corning Community College (SUNY CCC) observed World Suicide Prevention Day with a candlelight vigil on September 9, 2026, and resource table event on September 10, 2026. The events brought students and employees together to honor lost loved ones, offer hope to those who may be struggling, and foster a community of support.
Throughout the day, members of the campus community could visit World Suicide Prevention Day tables hosted by the SUNY CCC Health Office, Smile Through the Storms, the Steuben County Suicide Prevention Coalition, and the Student Assistance Program (SAP) through Clinical Associates of Pathways Inc. The tables offered free self-care resources, mental health information, and helped connect students and employees with support available both on and off campus.
“Events like this are critical for breaking down the stigma around mental health,” said Daisia Farley, Director of Student Life. “Hosting a suicide prevention vigil and resource event brings our campus community together to build awareness, educate each other, and show our students and staff that we are here to serve as each other's support system in times of need.”
Mary Kay Diakite, the College’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Director and SAP Coordinator, added that the event “shines a light on a growing public health issue that for many years has been kept silent. People realize that they are not alone and can see how many others have also been affected. They gain a sense of support, togetherness, and learn about resources.”
SUNY CCC students have access to free, confidential counseling services through SAP, provided in partnership with Clinical Associates of Pathways Inc. Counselors can assist with stress, relationship and family issues, depression and anxiety, anger management, substance use/abuse, and more. Appointments are available on campus and virtually. Students can contact SAP at sap@clinicalassoc.org, visit the SAP office in Rooms M127 and M128 in the lower level of the Commons Building, or call 607-936-1771.
