CORNING, N.Y. -- SUNY Corning Community College has announced the opening of its new Athletics Study
Center, a dedicated academic space that supports the overall development and success
of Red Barons student-athletes.
Located on the first floor of the gymnasium, the Athletics Study Center offers student-athletes a dedicated space to study, complete coursework, prepare for exams, and focus on their academic responsibilities while balancing the demands of collegiate athletics.
The center goes beyond a study space; it aims to strengthen the academic support network for SUNY Corning student-athletes by offering access to tutoring, technology, and campus support services.
The initiative reflects the College and Athletics Department’s commitment to supporting the whole student-athlete, promoting academic success, and fostering a culture of academic excellence.
“At SUNY Corning, student success is at the heart of everything we do, and this new Athletics Study Center is another example of our commitment to providing students with the resources and environment they need to reach their full potential,” said Dr. Terence L. Finley, President of SUNY Corning Community College.
“Do I want to support winners on the field and on the court? Yes, I do, and yes, we will. What’s more important to me is that we put winners in the classroom, because this is where the rest of your life starts. It’s so important that our student-athletes have the foundation they need to be successful.”
The Athletics Study Center primarily aims to support student-athletes by providing a more organized academic environment and ensuring accountability. It serves as a central hub for academic activities, helping student-athletes access available College resources and encouraging regular study routines and greater involvement in their academic responsibilities.
The center will also support the department’s initiatives to improve student-athlete retention and ensure academic eligibility by upholding high academic standards and providing support services.
“This center embodies what we want the Red Barons student-athlete experience to be,” said Isaac Bushey, Director of Athletics at SUNY Corning Community College. “We want our student-athletes to compete and succeed at a high level, but their responsibilities as students come first. Providing them with a dedicated space, access to resources, and additional academic accountability gives them another tool for success. Ultimately, our goal is to help our student-athletes remain eligible, persist toward graduation, and leave SUNY Corning prepared for whatever comes next.”
The Athletics Study Center is part of a broader vision to strengthen the student-athlete experience at SUNY Corning by ensuring academic achievement, personal development, and athletic success complement one another.
Red Barons Athletics, through the new center, aims to foster an environment where student-athletes are encouraged to excel academically as passionately as they pursue athletic success.
The goal is to equip every Red Barons student-athlete with the resources, structure, and support needed to succeed academically, stay on track toward their educational goals, and prepare for success beyond SUNY Corning Community College.
