Nurse in Training

We all know that the path to success isn’t a straight arrow. It’s not shiny, smooth, or clear. It’s steep, rocky, and uncertain. Despite this, it’s important to keep pushing, sacrificing, and dreaming. Lucrecia Frazier ’22 can attest to this, but she’s never lost sight of her end goal: becoming a nurse.

“I love helping people and I knew early on that I wanted to be a nurse,” said Lucrecia. “I’m the oldest of 10 siblings, so I’ve always had a nurturing personality and enjoyed taking care of others.”

After she graduated from high school Lucrecia got married and had children, putting her nursing dreams on hold.

Until now.

With three kids, a dream, and a fierce desire to succeed, Lucrecia enrolled in the SUNY Corning Community College nursing program at age 38.

“It was time for me to do something for myself and SUNY CCC has been absolutely amazing,” said Lucrecia. “I’m in New York by myself, and everybody [at SUNY CCC] has my back. All of the professors really care about how I’m doing in school and in my personal life.”

According to SUNY CCC Educational Planner Megan Mletzko, Lucrecia is a special person.

“Lucrecia is a great example of resiliency and compassion,” said Megan. “She is determined to stay on the path to achieve her goal and is always willing to show compassion to other students along the way.”

For Lucrecia, being a nurse means being willing to help all people, no matter the circumstance. Whether it’s performing a life-saving medical technique, or offering your shoulder and a handful of Kleenex, every situation matters.

“At the end of every day, I want to be able to know that I did something to help someone, said Lucrecia. “Everybody needs somebody who cares.”

After she graduates from SUNY CCC, Lucrecia plans to attend SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y.

“I’m not going to stop here. I’m going all the way to get my master’s degree,” she said.

Lucrecia’s goal is to become a nurse practitioner.

“When I was 12 I went to the doctor’s office and a lady, who wasn’t my normal doctor, walked in,” said Lucrecia. “She told me she was the nurse practitioner and I thought it was so cool. I researched everything I could about nurse practitioners and I was totally inspired after that.”

Lucrecia is looking forward to starting clinical rotations and getting to work in the local hospitals.

“I’m so excited to see where this journey takes me,” said Lucrecia. “It’s been a long time coming and I’m thankful for this College and everyone who has helped me get to this point.”
