October 4, 2018

SUNY Corning Community College invites the community to the Fall 2018 Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series Evicted, presented by Dr. Matthew Desmond, Princeton Sociologist and MacArthur Foundation Genius. The event will be held on October 24, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the SUNY Corning Community College Health Education Center (132 Denison Parkway East, Corning, N.Y.). Dr. Desmond will discuss his New York Times Bestseller and Pulitzer-Prize Winning Book, Evicted, which chronicles the stories of eight families dealing with eviction: a 21st century crisis.

Published by Penguin Random House, the book is hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of 21st century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Evicted won the 2017 Pulitizer Prize for General NonFiction and was named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times Book Review, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, Bloomberg, Esquire, Buzzfeed, Fortune, San Francisco Chronicle, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Politico, The Week, Bookpage, Kirkus Reviews, Amazon, Barnes and Noble Review, Apple, Library Journal, Chicago Public Library, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Shelf Awareness.
