Rendering of the Library Transformation

Proclamation & Ceremonial Groundbreaking

Construction on Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library to be celebrated with proclamations and ceremonial groundbreaking

Corning Community College (CCC) and the Corning Community College Development Foundation (CCCDF) will celebrate a milestone event on Friday, April 25, 2014, at 10:00 a.m to formally break ground for the Re-Imagined Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library.  Senator Thomas O’Mara will present the College with a proclamation at the event on the Spencer Hill campus, which is free and open to the public.

“As libraries increasingly function as connectors within and beyond our College community, this project will facilitate links with social spaces as well as service points—joining active tutored and collaborative spaces with quiet and self-directed spaces to create a 21st century, technology-rich, academic gathering place designed to foster community, collaboration, and most importantly—learning for all,” said Dr. Katherine P. Douglas, President of Corning Community College.

When complete, the Library will be technology-rich with climate-controlled spaces to protect rare resources; centralized academic support services, including tutoring and mentoring; and dynamic spaces for IT help, access and reference services, and faculty professional development.

The Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library is expected to reopen in January 2015. It is the cornerstone project of the $23.3 million transformational investment in student-centered learning, which is funded by Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties, SUNY, USDA Rural Development, Corning Incorporated Foundation, and private gifts. A variety of design and construction partners are engaged, including HOLT Architects, Welliver, Frey & Campbell Inc., John Mills Electric, and Landmark Enterprises.

“Our mission at USDA Rural Development includes improving educational opportunities for students of all ages in rural communities,” said Scott Collins, Acting State Director for USDA Rural Development.  “We are honored to assist Corning Community College with the renovations of their historical library. This partnership will produce new opportunities for students and improve the quality of campus life.”

CCC’s facilities redesign and renovation projects are part of a campus-wide masterplan and began in 2013 with the opening of Perry Hall, the College’s first residence hall.
