Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History

CCC to Host Jamie Nabozny and Screening of "Bullied"

Corning Community College will host Jamie Nabozny and screen his personal documentary: the movie Bullied on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 11:50 a.m.–1:15 p.m. on the Spencer Hill Campus in the Commons Building, Triangle Lounge. This event is free and open to the public.

Students and community members are invited to meet Jamie Nabozny and view his personal documentary, Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History. The film will be followed by a question and answer session with Jamie. He will also be available to talk with students after the program.

The documentary shows how Nabozny courageously stood up for his rights. He filed a lawsuit against the district and school officials, which led to an important court decision that public school officials had to protect all students from bullies, even those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT).

Jamie Nabozny grew up in Ashland, a small town in northern Wisconsin on the south shore of Lake Superior. His life changed drastically when he was targeted in middle school for being gay. His years of harassment ended with a beating that put him in the hospital and required abdominal surgery. Jamie then moved to Minneapolis. After realizing that many other young people endured similar fates, he decided to fight back.

With the help of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Jamie won a landmark lawsuit in Federal court that establishes that all young people including those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender deserve a safe educational experience. The Southern Poverty Law Center produced a documentary titled Bullied that chronicles his life. Jamie now speaks out for the millions of kids bullied in our schools every day. He travels the country and shares his story so that no child has to endure what he endured. Jamie was recently named a Defender of Human Rights by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.
