Presents an introduction to modern genetics, including the transmission of hereditary information; genetic mapping; DNA structure, replication, and repair; gene expression and regulation; population genetics; and molecular evolution. Laboratory exercises will complement these topics by utilizing current techniques in molecular biology, including polymerase chain reaction, recombinant DNA technology, and bioinformatics- and genomics-based approaches to problem-solving. (4 cr. hrs.) (Spring). Lecture/laboratory. May not be substituted for BIOL 1520. Lab fee.
Prerequisite: BIOL 1020 or 1510 and a semester of college chemistry, or one year of college biology.
