Lean/Six Sigma Programs

Both Lean and Six Sigma Methodologies look at maximizing profits but from slightly different angles. In simple terms:

  • Six Sigma seeks to eliminate defects and build consistent processes.
  • Lean seeks to eliminate waste and non-value added steps in a process.

Lean projects are sometimes thought of as smaller in scope and perhaps requiring less vigor to resolve while six sigma – green belt projects are generally larger in scope and usually involve a significant savings to the organization. Six sigma projects utilize a systematic method referred to as DMAIC (Define – Measure – Analyze – Improve & Control).

Ideally anyone seeking to master process improvement should be familiar with both Lean & Six Sigma to reduce waste, eliminate variance, and build sustainable processes that consistently deliver value to the customer at the lowest possible operational cost. Corning Community College offers several training programs focusing on process improvement:

Implementing Lean

Lean is an in-demand methodology used to drive out waste and improve the quality, cost and performance of any process. This course is for a wide audience of organization decision makers who are looking to implement lean in their organization. This program reviews lean leadership, lean deployment, the lean culture and explores various lean tools including:

  • Continuous improvement
  • Waste elimination
  • 5S
  • Lean Metrics
  • Value Stream Mapping
  • Kaizen Events
  • Lean methodology
  • PDCA Cycle
Date: March 14 –  April 25, 2013
Time: 8:00am – 12:00pm (Thursdays)
Cost: $500
Location: Business Development Center, Corning

SIX SIGMA –GREEN BELT CERTIFICATION (Including Lean tools)

This is a traditional six sigma training program focusing on industrial tools and methodologies to reduce errors, improve quality, reduce redundancies, and improve efficiencies. Lean Six Sigma uses a data-driven approach to fix root causes of problems and provides tools to ensure corrective actions are sustained.

  • History and background of Lean and Six Sigma
  • Integration of Six Sigma and Lean Enterprise
  • Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC)
  • Project Leadership and Launching
  • Project Selection
  • Project charter preparation
  • Understanding Voice of the Customer (VOC)
  • Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ)
  • Process Mapping – SIPOC, flow charts, value stream mapping
  • Basic and Inferential statistics
  • Histograms and Pareto Charts
  • Lean and Six Sigma metrics
  • Cause and effect diagram
  • Multi-Variable Charting
  • Process FMEA
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Control Plans
  • Mistake Proof / Fail Safe
  • Benchmarking
  • Theory of Constraints (TOC)
  • Design For Six Sigma (DFSS)
  • Value-added Analysis
  • Kaizen Techniques & 5S
Date: March 9  – May 18, 2013
Time: 8:30am – 5:00pm (Saturdays)
Cost: $1500
Location: Business Development Center, Corning

SIX SIGMA for Non-Profits

Now more than ever, non-profit organizations are challenged to reduce costs while increasing their services. Six Sigma for non-profits shows how methodologies and tools utilized by major manufacturing companies will help non-profit organizations reduce errors, improve quality, reduce redundancies, and deliver higher volume or quality using lower resources.
